My eyes moistened more than once, yes, with empathy for the humanity on the page, but also because that humanity tied itself to my own stories, to the last time I saw my paternal grandmother, to my own failings as a parent, to grief, to a semblance of hope, to love. Beautiful collection which captures the beauty of the natural world, with vivid, oftentimes, disturbing images of the past longing for reconciliation and forgiveness. Well done, sir.
Wonderfully crafted poems full of heart and emotion.
Some of these evoked a familiar ache in me like I could have written the same. I was taken to another time and place that exists within me.
These poems beautifully convey the struggles of family life. It was an honor and a privilege to have an inside look at the mind of a former teacher who had such a huge impact on my life.
Do yourself a favor and buy this book! It is a treasure.
Deeply moving account of a young boy's fractured perspective of his parent's dysfunctional relationship, his father's emotional and verbal abuse of his mother that finally leads to divorce, and then the young boy's life as he grows up, split between his new family and the troubling visits every summer with his father and stepmother, where the harsh criticism and emotional manipulation continue to grow worse the older the boy gets. As the boy becomes a man and has children of his own, he tries to find forgiveness towards his father, but the troubled relationship only seems to grow more fractured. The book ultimately ends with the letting go of the toxic relationships in his life in order to step forward into a healthier lifestyle for the sake of his family as well as his own happiness and peace of mind.
